A pulmonologist and senior lecturer at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr Uju Ozoh, has emerged winner of the World Lung Health Award for 2023.

UNILAG’s spokesperson, Mrs Joke Alaga-Ibraheem, made the disclosure in a statement, saying the don would receive her prize at the opening ceremony of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2023 International Conference scheduled for the US in May.

The respiratory health award, according to the ATS, recognises physicians and scientists for outstanding contributions and achievements in pulmonary disease, critical care and sleep health and with potential ability to eliminate health disparities in that aspect.

Mrs Alaga-Ibraheem said the UNILAG community, and particularly the vice chancellor, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, was excited about the achievement and congratulated the award winner and wished her more wins.

Ozoh obtained her medical degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and she has a fellowship in pulmonology from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

She obtained further clinical training and experience at the Tygerberg Academic Hospital, University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa and from the sleep medicine programme of the Mount Sinai Medical Centre, New York.

Her areas of research interest include airway diseases, pulmonary complications of respiratory exposures and chronic medical conditions as well as tobacco epidemiology and obstructive sleep apnea.

She is currently exploring the health effects of household kerosene use in Nigeria.
