A total of 104 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Bauchi State have been completely renovated and handed over to Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA) by the Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The latest of the facilities in Duguri, Alkaleri LGA was handed over, on Monday, to the government to enhance health care delivery services in the state.
While handing over the Yalwan Duguri Primary Health Care Centre, UNICEF Chief of Office, Mr Bahnu Pathak, said that UNICEF has supplied basic medical equipment to all the 323 Primary Health Care Centers across the state.
He further said that UNICEF is working closely with the Ministry of health and Bauchi state Primary Health Care Development Agency to provide quality health services to the citizens of the state, adding that the Yalwan Duguri Primary Health Care centre is one of the Centers of Excellence where it has also provided supplies and supported the renovation work.
Bhanu Pathak said: “We have done our part, now I will like to request from the local authorities in charge of this facility and members of staff working here with support and guidance from our chairperson in this local government, to maintain operations services of this facility.”
He added that “It is not enough to build a house, it has to be maintained. This is the responsibility of the local authorities here.UNICEF will always be there to support with all the necessary supplies, capacity building, we will work with the team, but the main responsibility of operations and maintenance is your duty.”

The UNICEF Chief of Office also said that UNICEF is working with different partners such as Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dangote Foundation to support the state government in fulfilling its promises of providing quality health care services to the people, adding that during the flag off of the Maternal l Newborn Child Health week, it supported the state with almost N2 billion.
Receiving the renovated health facility, on behalf of the state government, the Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency,(BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, said that over the years, health care centres have been in a dilapidated state, particularly infrastructural decay that was begging for prompt intervention, adding that the present administration has changed the narratives through pragmatic approach in its quest to actualise democratic dividends to the people, which include the provision of quality and effective health system.
Rilwanu Mohammed who was represented by a director in the agency, Alhaji Bello Mustapha, said that the handing over of the Yalwan Duguri Health facility has proven the determination of the state government to address the infrastructural decay in the state.
He pointed out that the health facilities are now 104 in the state to be completed and handed over to the state health agency out of the 107 agreed by EU-UNICEF.
He urged the beneficiaries of the EU-UNICEF Maternal Newborn Child Health intervention to ensure patronage and attend antenatal care, skill delivery, postnatal care, Childbirth services, immunization and other PHC services so as to fully benefit from the objectives of the project.
