Two weeks after inferno, another fire destroys property at Oko Baba Sawmill in Lagos

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has saved residents of Oko Baba from an inferno that gutted the Okobaba Sawmill which went up in flames overnight on Thursday.

This is coming two weeks after another fire razed some parts of the sawmill on Tuesday, March 16, where goods worth millions were also destroyed.

The acting Controller, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, who disclosed the Thursday incident to journalists, added that firefighters prevented the fire from extending to adjoining shanties and residential areas.

Adeseye disclosed that the agency received an alert at about 2:39 p.m. indicating that sawmill was on fire and action was immediately taken with the deployment of three fire engines and crew members to combat the situation.

She further explained that on arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the fire, which erupted in the market spanning many hectares of land, was raging and had consumed various equipment used for cutting, filling and finishing woods and planks, as well as stock such as wood polish, among other items.

She further explained that the cause of the incident was unknown as speculations are rife of possible carelessness, while an investigation into the remote cause had begun in earnest.

“The Fire which was combated all through the night was finally put out at about 8:00 a.m.,: she said.

Confirming that no life was lost in the incident, Adeseye said the agency, in collaboration with other emergency responders,  worked tirelessly to put the situation under control.
