Two security guards killed by suspected cable thieves in Akwa Ibom

Two security guards manning an oil firm, SULFUX Nigeria Limited in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have been confirmed killed by suspected armoured cable thieves.

It was learnt the victims were hacked to death by the criminals, who broke into the premises at night and made away with the armoured cables at the fabrication yard of the firm.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Local Government Chairman, Mr Melford Asuquo, on behalf of his boss, explained that their remains were discovered by one of the guards who came in the morning to relieve them and take over duties for the day.

“Report reaching us reveals that two private security men working for SULFUK Nigeria Limited have been murdered by unknown thieves, carting away armoured cables and other properties.

“Information got to us from a colleague of the dead security men, who is a day watch, having gone to take over from the night watchmen and found the corpses.

“The incident has been reported to the Police and the corpses deposited at the Ibeno hospital mortuary”, the statement said.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Odiko Macdon, a Police Superintendent said “the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Amiengheme Andrew, has ordered a discreet investigation of the matter,” adding that “preliminary findings revealed the guards were hacked to death with machetes as multiple wounds were discovered all over their bodies.

He revealed the identities of the deceased guards as being indigenes of the neighbouring Eket Local Government Area.
“We have received the report and investigations have commenced, and hopefully, the culprits will be apprehended in no distant future,” Macdon assured and urged those with more information and facts on the matter to volunteer to security agencies as their identity would be protected.
