Two die in shootout as police rescue 16 hotel workers, recover arms, others in Delta

Two persons have reportedly died after a shootout between operatives of the Delta Police Command and a gang of suspected armed robbers cum kidnappers in Delta State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in Asaba after a team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS), acting on a tip-off, swooped on the gang of armed robbers/kidnappers allegedly sighted opposite the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office.

A gun duel that allegedly ensued left two of the suspects fatally injured. They later died from gunshot injuries while others reportedly escaped.

One AK47 rifle with BREECH No. 19567 and two magazines with 18 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.

In a related development, acting on a distress call also on Wednesday at about 7:37 p.m, police operatives rescued a hotelier identified as Zion Onofighea unhurt and his 16 workers who came under the attack at Ogor, Ughelli.

A red Toyota Highlander jeep was also recovered from the scene just as the Ag. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Delta Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the two incidents in a statement, said the police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.

DSP Edafe, who urged criminals in the state to turn a new leaf or relocate from the state, said the efforts of the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali to reduce crime in the state, was fast yielding results.
