No fewer than five people have reportedly drowned in Gantsa town, the headquarters of Buji Local Government Area in Jigawa State.
This information was included in a statement issued, signed, and made available to Online Tribune by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams. The statement noted: “On a tragic and sad note, today, Tuesday, August 27th, 2024, at about 12:00 hours, the police in Gantsa town received information that five people had drowned in the town.”
According to the statement, “The deceased were in a cattle cart attempting to cross a flooded road in Gantsa town, Buji Local Government Area. The cart capsized due to the floodwater, leading to their drowning.”

DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams stated that “Upon receiving the distress report, a team of policemen, in collaboration with local divers, rushed to the scene to rescue the victims. They were taken to Gantsa Cottage Hospital, where the medical doctor on duty regrettably confirmed all of them dead.”
The statement noted that among the victims were two children, aged two and seven years old, as well as a teenage girl, Fiddausi Dahiru, Lurwanu Adamu, 30, and Idris Abubakar, 50. The bodies were released to their relatives for burial.
Online Tribune recalls that a few weeks ago, three teenage girls also drowned and lost their lives in a pond in Tulla village, Buji Local Government Area. Additionally, two people, a father and son, died in the same week when their house collapsed due to heavy rainfall that caused flooding.
