Tips for surviving societal changes

LAST week, we looked at some professions and career path that used to be in high demand a few years ago but are no longer in high demand

. The reason for this can be put down to change. The world is not what it used to be a decade ago, it is not even the same way it was two years ago. Things have changed and so should we.

Change comes in the form of anything from relationship separation and family deaths to job changes, moving houses, accidents or successes. Regardless of what path we follow in life, we are bound to experience change, and our resilience to succeeding obstacles is profound. We learn to adapt to new environments, form new habits, and readdress the way we perceive ourselves. We become stronger versions of ourselves with better defensive mechanisms and a smarter way of conquering our challenges.

In the grand scheme of things, change is how we have gotten here, from the stone age to the jet age. Change has been a part of our lives as humans, it then begs the question of why we don’t prepare for changes. How exactly do we prepare for change? It must be said at this point that change can equally be positive; you can be promoted at work, you can move on to a bigger workplace. How do you cope with these sorts of changes?

 

Know that there will be a change

Humans like comfort, we like to think that things will be all good and nice. However, we know this is not always the case. If you are where you would like to be today, you must be aware that change is constant and if you don’t put in more work, it is only a matter of time before the wind of change will sweep you aside. Knowing that change is imminent is the first step to prepare for change; this keeps you mentally prepared for change.

Knowing that there will be change will also push you to gain necessary information in the form of education and skills that can help you prepare for change. Not just that, it can help you thrive even in change. Someone once said “You find out where the world is going, and you go there” That is how you act when you already know that there will be a change. This is why preparing for change is important.

 

Plan for the change

Knowing that there will be a change is only the first part of adapting to change; you have to plan for the change. Since you know there will be a change, do you sit on your hand and do nothing or do you swing into action in order to be a part of the change? The answer is obvious. It is the reason why we go to therapy after losing a loved one, it is why we study hard to understand a new role after a promotion. It is just our own way of living with the change.

If you are getting scared about planning and coping with the change, remind yourself about all the times you’ve already survived a big change in your life. The last breakup, you made it through. The last time you got fired, here you are, we made it again. That time someone was really upset with you – well here we are. We seem to survive every single time our life changes, and we didn’t even break a sweat. Well, maybe a little but we are still here.

 

Involve others in the change

In a lot of cases, change is not what you prepare for all by yourself. Yes, there is that place of building internal fortitude and mentally readying yourself for change but it is scarcely done alone. You need experts, mentors, associates to help you through the process. Involving knowledgeable people in the design and execution of change can help you ensure you are on the right track. This might include joining a study group or an accountability network where your readiness for change can be gauged.

 

Ruthless execution

When you have assessed your readiness for change and you know you are ready to go for it, you shouldn’t hold back. Get it and give it your all. You must execute ruthlessly, that is how to stay with change.
