Tinubu vows to address regulations hindering tertiary education reforms

President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, stated that his administration will address some of the obnoxious regulatory frameworks hindering tertiary education in the country.

Tinubu emphasised that his administration would invest in education and research to ensure that Nigerian graduates remain competitive globally. He acknowledged that the root causes of strikes in universities would be scrutinized.

The President made these remarks at the 47th convocation of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, Tinubu expressed the administration’s commitment to education, assuring that nothing would thwart the aspirations of Nigerian students for quality education.

He stated, “We must continue to invest in education and research to ensure that our graduates remain competitive in the repetitively changing world. We will address some of the root causes of trade union strikes and the university and tertiary institutions’ unnecessary waste of time. We will address some of the obnoxious regulatory frameworks and make some fundamental changes.”

Tinubu pledged a holistic approach to strengthening the education system, with increased investment at all levels to make Nigeria more globally competitive. He acknowledged the nation’s challenges, urging prayers and support for the government’s nation-building efforts.

“The challenges may seem daunting, but they also present opportunities for innovation and growth. Our graduates and the university system have the potential to make a significant contribution to addressing these challenges and creating a better future for all.”

The Chancellor of the University, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Etsu Nupe, encouraged the graduates to use the skills they acquired to meet the country’s challenges. He emphasized the importance of a nation’s future depends on its human resources and the essential role of knowledge, skills, and capacity in well-being, sustainability, growth, and development.

However, at the convocation ceremony, Professor of History Toyin Omoyeni Falola was honoured by Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife’s authorities, with a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt Honoris Causa).

The honour, according to the university Chancellor, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, was in recognition of the scholar’s intellectual contributions to the world at large. Falola, an alumnus of OAU, expressed gratitude, acknowledging that he owes his success to the institution.
