‘The New Patriots’ the movie: A break-away from the norm

Published by

“Looking at the situation of the country presently, Nigeria seems to be sitting on a keg of gunpowder as the oppressed could be tired of being oppressed and level up with their oppressors.” These were the words of veteran actor, Akin Lewis at a private screening of the movie ‘The New Patriots’ held in Lagos recently.

Although, the ‘The New Patriots’ will be coming out on June 11, a day to democracy day in Nigeria, it has already foreseen one of the greatest protests in Africa which rocked Nigeria in 2020 – EndSARS. These protests saw the greater part of the country’s population – the youths, took to the streets to condemn and protest against police brutality in the country, which was becoming a thorn in the flesh of young Nigerians.

These protests saw an end to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), a special unit of the Nigerian Police Force the Federal Government was forced to proscribe.

The movie, a political drama and social impact movie will be heralding the celebration of Democracy Day on June 12. It is a movie which demonstrates the positive non-violent contributions of the youths to normalise the floundering and corruption-infested political reality of the Republic of Aruguna – a fictional tiny country in which the movie was set.

The movie parades top stars such as legendary Akin Lewis, who is known for his incredible ways of interpreting roles in top political movies that have rocked our cinemas in recent past. Other movie stars who also featured in the movie include LateefAdedimeji, Dele Odule, Bimbo Oshin, Taiwo Ibikunle, Adebimpe Oyebade, Damipe Adekoya, Bimbo Sunday and many more, who all interpreted their roles in very brilliant and unusual manners.

In other to avoid a spoiler, ‘The New Patriots’ is just a movie for the season, as it summarises our democracy as a people and also projects a solution. It is a bilingual movie, with the use of English and other Nigerian indigenous languages and also, has superb sound effects, cinema lovers are definitely in for an amazing experience when they watch on the big screen. Another worthy feature of the movie ‘The New Patriots’ is the originality in its soundtracks; the soundtracks in the movie were solely recorded for its purpose.

The soundtracks, which were written by Rotimi Adelola, who doubles as the producer of the movie, include tracks like ‘Youth Wake Up’ and ‘Never Again’, both tracks were produced by Kent Oxygen and HollaJosh respectively. “‘The New Patriots’ is not the usual Nollywood movie, the message this movie is passing is that if we do not change, there cannot be that country that we want. Both the leadership and the followership need to have a change in orientation,” Akin Lewis said.

“We can get a country that we all deserve when we the work as a collective thing, we must take the change from the roots, from the little lies that we tell a child today and what we do in their presence. These children are the ones who will become youths and leaders tomorrow and I will always urge our youth to maintain the patriotic spirits because their future is in their hands” another cast, Damipe Adekoya said. ‘The New Patriots’which is produced by Rotimi Adelola, directed by Adebayo Tijani and Terry Ayebo and will be in the cinemas nationwide from June 11.
