The demand of obedience (III)

Published by

Jesus Christ obeyed the Father to the point of death. In the journey towards the Cross, He had moments of perplexity. At one of such moments, it was recorded that He broached the topic of avoiding the Cross. However, even in the face of imminent pain, humiliation and death, He still obeyed the Father. While He was in the garden of Gethsemane, this was the record of scripture:

Matthew 26:39  And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

If our Lord preoccupied Himself with all that pleased the Father, we have no excuse. We must also please the Father by obeying Him in all things. We should hold nothing back; not even our lives! Paul emphasized this point to the Philippians:

Philippians 2:5-11   Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus Christ obeyed the Father, and now we can celebrate Easter. In fact, it is because He obeyed the Father that the Church exists. His obedience procured our redemption from the curse of the Law. His obedience opened the way for us to partake in the blessings of the Almighty:

Ephesians 2:12-13  …at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

The proof that we are in Christ, however, is only found in our obedience to Him. Jesus Christ said:

John 8:31  … If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

Let us therefore make up our minds to obey Him. It is better to simply obey, than to be struggling to manage the complications and consequences of our disobedience. That is what King Saul did. Disobedience led him to lying, and other sins; until he lost his crown. Meanwhile, the word of God says,

Isaiah 1:19  If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land

Which one is your choice today? Obedience or rebellion?

Concluded.
