AN Islamic organisation, The Companion, has distributed N1 million as zakat to 11 beneficiaries from Oyo State.
At the event held in Ibadan, Alhaji NuraIn Zakariyyahu, the Oyo district’s Amir of the association of Muslim men in business and the professions, said the zakat distribution, which is an annual programme of the national body of the association, was meant to provide succour to needy Muslims.
He said the beneficiaries, who were drawn from different parts of the state, were selected from among 103 applicants.
Alhaji Zakariyyahu noted that some of the criteria used in the selection of the beneficiaries included the nature of their professions, how urgent their needs were and their locations.
He said that the eleven beneficiaries were eventually picked based on the available funds.
He explained that a committee was already in place to, from time to time, check on the beneficiaries for their progress.
Earlier, a member of the Oyo district of The Companion, Dr Abass AbdSalam, emphasised the importance of zakat in Islam, saying it was meant to redistribute wealth to end poverty.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the money appropriately so that in the nearest future, they could also be in a position to pay zakat.
One of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of others, Malam Kazeem Bakare, appreciated the organisers and promised that the money would be used judiciously.
