Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Taraba State, Dr Nkantah Edet
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Taraba State has called on Governor Darius Ishaku to pay doctors in the state the approved COVID-19 allowances to boost their morale for efficient service delivery.
NMA chairman, Dr Nkantah Edet, made the call at a press conference to commemorate the 2021 Physicians’ Week held at the Doctor’s House in Jalingo.
The chairman also called on state governments owing doctors salaries and allowances to pay them to prevent further frustration among the workforce.
The union, however, commended Governor Darius Ishaku for giving approval for skipping, 90% corrected CONMESS and implementation of promotions for doctors in the State Civil Service.
“However, despite these interventions by the governor, payment of Covid-19 allowances is still pending.
“I want to use this opportunity to commend the governor and also to urge him to do more and fast track the necessary framework and infrastructure for the commencement of the Taraba State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme.
“This will reduce the burden of the out of pocket expenditure for healthcare services.
“There is also the need for the commencement of internship training including horsemanship in the Taraba State Specialist Hospital, Jalingo and the commencement of residency training in Federal Medical Centre,” he said.
Edet appealed to the state government to assist the tertiary health institutions in the state in providing the necessary assistance in the area of postgraduate training and research.
This is even as he called for the employment of doctors and other medical officers to manage the primary healthcare centres in the local government areas for effective service delivery.
On the resident doctors strike recently called off, the NMA chairman called on the government to respect the agreement reached with the union and urged his colleagues to continue to work with unwavering commitment, dedication and focus for the benefit of the society.
