Tallen insists on implementation of Child Rights Act nationwide

The minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, has said delegates to the 21st Regular Council Meeting on Women Development, in Uyo, would deliberate on gender-based violence and child right amongst others.

She said it was not enough to domesticate the Child Rights Act and others laws that affect women development but emphasised the implementation of the same by all states.

The minister said these are part of the 185 memoranda that would be discussed at the conference with a view to empower Nigerian women for the safety and security of the nation.

Dame Tallen said the council, was the National Gender Machinery, of the Federal Government of Nigeria, to deal with issues that affect women and would deploy its resolutions towards implementation.

She said this at a press conference ahead of the National Council Meeting on Women Affairs billed to hold in Akwa-Ibom State with the theme: “Gender Equality: A Panacea for Enduring Security and Sustainable Economic Development in the Post-COVID-19 Era.”

According to her, the council will deliberate on all 185 memoranda submitted.

She said the conference would among other issues “talk on gender-based violence, violence against children, empowerment of women, women can be described as the face of poverty and if women are empowered, the narrative will change.

“Until we desire to have more women empowered, the economy will keep going round and round.

“We need to get more women because the more we get women empowered the better the country would become.

“The issue of lack of implementation of the Child Rights Act will be seriously addressed, it is not good enough to have the state domesticate the Act implementation is the key.

“Like the issue of gender-based violence, child abuse, the people are hurt, you go to the police station and the after one or two days the matter is ou.

“We are demanding for justice for all those that are hurting and we seek implementation of the child right Act.

“We are not fighting the men, we can only do development while working with you. If everything is done on equal basis, like women should have equal right, things would be good for the country,” she submitted.

She maintained that women issues traverse all sectors of the economy and these will be discussed in detail.

“For instance, women and children issues are in planning, health, education, environment, technology, agriculture, finance, humanitarian services, security architecture, etc. Therefore, we need allies to help us in our tasks as we cascade the gains of Mr. President’s promises to the majority of women and children in the country,” she maintained.

Tallen also decorated the new Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi who made his first appearance today with the ‘HeforShe’ title which she said was a kick-off, of the Akwa Ibom Award ceremony billed for week-long event.

In his remark, the permanent secretary said investment in women is an investment in the future of the family and the nation.
