Monkeypox is a viral illness with symptoms that resemble, to some extent, smallpox, although it is generally less severe. The symptoms of monkeypox typically appear within 5 to 21 days after exposure. The disease progresses through several stages, and its course can be divided into two main periods: Prodromal Stage (Early Symptoms)

Fever: This is often the first symptom, and it can be quite high. Headache: A severe headache is common. Muscle Aches (Myalgia): Pain in the muscles can occur. Backache: Many patients report significant back pain. Swollen Lymph Nodes (Lymphadenopathy): This is a key distinguishing feature from smallpox.

Lymph nodes may swell, particularly in the neck, armpit, or groin. Chills and Exhaustion: Patients often feel very tired and may experience chills. Rash Development (Skin Eruptions). Initial Rash: A few days after the fever, a rash develops. It often starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Progression of Rash: The rash progresses through several stages The rash tends to be more concentrated on the face and extremities rather than the trunk. Other Possible Symptoms: Sore Throat: Some people experience a sore throat. Cough: Respiratory symptoms like a cough might occur.

Conjunctivitis: Eye inflammation may be seen in some cases. The illness typically lasts for 2 to 4 weeks. The rash is highly contagious and remains so until all the scabs have fallen off and new skin has formed. While most cases of monkeypox are mild to moderate, severe cases can occur, particularly in immunocompromised individuals or those with underlying health conditions.
