Suspected rapists on the prowl in Sapele

Happenings in Sapele since a fortnight ago indicate that some suspected rapists are on the loose in the community as they specialise in breaking into homes at night in the form of robbery and in the process rape female residents.

Sapele is the headquarters of Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State and has been smeared recently by bloody cult-related killings.

The areas worse-hit in this crime is Okpe road and Olley road, Sapele.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the rapists come in disguised asrobbers, break into homes, collect a few valuables, but spend more time in defiling female residents than stealing valuables.

Among other incidents that have occurred, a witness account of two areas, said that their main aim seems to be defiling of female residents.

At Okpe road close to Deeper Life Church, they struck last week and raped the female resident in the house.

A witness had it that they were three in number and they took the girl out of the room and raped her in turns before escaping through Ayomanor Primary School compound.

In another incident that happened at Olley road, the rapists were five in number. After breaking into the house of their victim, they again took the female resident outside and raped her one after the other before fleeing.

A resident who pleaded anonymity alleged that the rapists looked like members of the local vigilantes group in the area because the gun they carry in both cases was long as rifle-like the ones vigilantes use.

Another resident said that the rapists must be members of the local vigilantes group, alleging that they took delight in taking their victims outside to rape not having the fear of being seen by the local vigilantes that patrol the area at night.

The witness said that this accounted for what happened at Okpe road as he overheard one of the rapists telling his victim while raping her that she had been refusing his advances in the area for some time, hence he decided to have his way with her forcefully.

Concerned residents in Sapele are calling on security operatives to quickly intervene and call the vigilante groups that patrol Okpe, Omene, Olley and Lawrence roads to order and ask them to be extra vigilant as the perpetrators seems to know the area so well and are so bold in carrying out the act.
