Operatives of the Kwara State Police Command have arrested two suspected kidnappers and a group of cultists/internet fraudsters in the Ilorin metropolis.
In a statement by the command’s spokesman, Okasanmi Ajayi, the arrests were made between Wednesday and Friday, adding that three locally made pistols and four locally made cut to size guns were recovered from the suspects.
“On assumption of office barely two weeks ago, the Commissioner of Police, Emienbo Tuesday Assayomo, assured the citizens of Kwara State of his readiness to make Kwara State uncomfortable for criminals.
“In making that assertion a reality, security strategies have been emplaced, which include the sectorization of the Ilorin metro, with the deployment of enough men for patrol/stop and search and other strategies that are put very close to our chest.
“The effort yielded some positive results with the arrests of two suspected kidnappers:
Rafiu Ganiyu, male, of Idi-Ogun Compound, Ganmo aged 45 years and Mustapha Afolabi, male of Beside Ganmo, aged 42 years.
“The suspects were arrested at about 0530hrs of 20/08/2021 on a motorbike along Ganmo/Omu-Aran road by eagle-eyed Police Operatives on stop and search duty.
“When the search was conducted on them, three locally made pistols and four locally made cut to size guns were found on them. On interrogation, the suspects could not give satisfactory accounts of themselves, fueling the suspicion that they were on a kidnapping mission.
“In a similar operation, on 18/08/2021 at about 0900hrs, while on patrol along with Malete Area, acting on an actionable intelligence that a group of suspected cultists had assembled at a location in Malete, a team of operative attached to the Command swooped on the location and nine suspects were arrested.
“In their statement, they confessed to being internet fraudsters/scammers. Some exotic cars, phones with Laptops were recovered from them. Suspects in both cases will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed.
“CP Emienbo Tuesday Assayomo, while assuring the good people of Kwara State of effective policing of the state, also reiterated his total abhorrence to indiscipline, extortion and laxity among his personnel.
“He also assures the citizens of his readiness to respect their fundamental human rights in the course of performing our duties.”
