Surgeons laud Ogun govt’s commitment in healthcare delivery system

The West African College of Surgeons (WACS), Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Yaba, Lagos has lauded the Ogun State Government in its commitment towards the repositioning of the health sector.

The body of surgeons, in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kunle Somorin, commended government during a visit to the State Hospital Ijaye, Abeokuta, for re-accreditation of Postgraduate and Residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The group said it was impressed by the noticeable improvement on the facilities, expressing optimism that the newly procured state-of-the-art operative equipment would expose resident doctors to global health practice.

The Chairman, WACS, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, said the re-accreditation exercise was is in line with the global health practice, in order to improve the facilities and allied specialist doctors for medical schools and teaching hospitals in West Africa.

Ikechebulu advised the state government to relocate some structures within the hospital and also called on the government to construct a standard accommodation for resident doctors to enable them to attend to emergencies. 

The chairman also pointed out the need for the government to move the neonatal centre of the hospital closer to the operating theatre, and the need to procure transport incubator for the maternity ward.

He said, “It is commendable that a secondary health facility has gone beyond the confines, to run a postgraduate and residency training programme here in Ijaye, Abeokuta”.

TribuneOnline recalls that Governor Abiodun recently ordered the procurement of modern equipment such as anaesthesia machine, patient monitor, single and double oxygen concentrator, gunnery trolleys, incubator resuscitative machine, foldaway sketcher, delivery beds, laparoscopic unit, cardiotocographic machine, cardiac defibrillators, instrument trolleys, suctioning, autoclaving machine, wheelchairs among others to replace the broken ones in all the state hospitals.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Dr Sade Adebanjo, expressed government’s commitment to putting the necessary infrastructure in place in its bid to restore Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital’s accreditation.
