Akwa Ibom State SUBEB
THE Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has sacked 11 teachers in Biase Local Government Area of the state, who had no requisite educational qualifications.
SUBEB board chairman, Dr Stephen Odey disclosed this during teachers’ verification and promotion exercise in Biase Local Government Area.
Odey, who said the sacked teachers were not qualified to teach, however, gave them an option of working as security guards.
He said, “you have no business being in the teaching profession without the requisite qualification, you cannot give what you do not have. If you want to become a teacher, do the right thing by going to school to read and qualify for the job.”
“Your services will henceforth be needed in the area of tackling insecurity challenges being faced by the school.”
The board chairman expressed worry over decline in the number of pupils enrolled in public primary schools, which he said, was caused by the fallen standard of basic education in the state.
Odey said, “gone are the days, when teachers were highly respected in the society, not now that we are struggling to get respect. The reason is due to the influx of un-qualified people who have found their ways in to the system.”
He stated that it was on such premise that most parents were withdrawing their wards from public schools to private schools which were not better equipped than the public ones.
The SUBEB boss charged teachers in the state to live up to their responsibilities, by making use of available resources to improve standard of education in the country.
On the irregularities in payment of teachers’ salaries, he said “SUBEB has not taken over payment of salaries yet, the local government is still responsible for that. When we eventually take over payment of your salaries, you will not have any cause to complain.”
