STEMi to host virtual World Youth Skills event for African youths

STEMi Makers Africa, a Nigerian social and STEM education organisation, is set to hold a virtual event for youths this Saturday on the occasion of the World Youth Skill Month.

This was made known to Tribune Online by the founder of the organisation, Amanda Obidike.

Obidike noted that the event, themed ‘Re-imagining youth skills post-pandemic, which will be held on Zoom and streamed LIVE on YouTube, will be attended by over 110 participants.

She also noted that the event is supported by the Nigerian Global Affairs Council; Lakehouse Consulting, UK; United Nations Development Programme Agency; and Rolls-Royce.

“We are hosting the event to highlight youth skills development and draw attention to the critical need for marketable skills and entrepreneurship,” Obidike said. “The event will be an opportunity for dialogue between young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, firms, employers’ and workers’ organisations, and policymakers.”

People expected to speak at the event include; Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, South Africa; Reginald Aziza, an Attorney at Chevron Nigeria Limited; Baiba Ziga, the founder and CEO of Lakehouse Consulting, UK; and Frida Nzaba, the overhaul manufacturing engineer at Rolls-Royce.

Obidike stated that, with the event, they aim to highlight youth skills development and to celebrate the resilience and the creativity of youths throughout the pandemic and its associated crisis.

“We want to focus attention on how technical, vocational education and training (TVET) systems and STEM should be adapted for a better Africa, and to reflect on skills that are needed today and for the future,” she said. “We encourage youths to participate in our recovery (Leadership in Africa, COVID, Country Systems). We are imagining priorities youths should adapt for the post-COVID-19 world.”
