State of nation: Interfaith dialogue forum calls for national dialogue, equity

Published by

The Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace (IDPF) has called on the Federal government to organise a national dialogue which it said would salvage the country from its current socio-political problems and insecurity.

IDPF also called on the government to ensure equity in distributing the socio-economic opportunities in order to facilitate nation-building.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Co-Chairmen of the religious group, Alhaji Kunle Sanni Ishaq and Bishop Sunday Onuoha.

The group said it has been following the daily reports of killings and destruction of property which involve herders-farmers clashes, ethnic and religious violence, criminality of different types, intra-communal, inter-communal, political, and regional tensions.

They said the current situation in the country today is worrisome with its attendant deteriorating effects on the citizens and their livelihood.

“We call for concerted efforts towards true transformation of the country’s abundant opportunity that will generate consensus on the way forward, calling on all Nigerians to commit themselves to acts of patriotism.

“We are using this medium to appeal to the Nigerian governments to do the needful by organising a national dialogue so as to provide a forum for holistic suggestions and recommendations that will bring about the New Nigeria that will address the yearnings and aspirations of the citizens, as well as ensuring public safety and protection.

“Also, we call on governments at all levels to take urgent steps in ensuring that there is equitable distribution of the socio-economic opportunities to all Nigerians in order to facilitate genuine nation-building.

“We appreciate the national assembly for the ongoing constitutional review process across the country and call on all Nigerians to seize the opportunity to give their inputs to the review so as to put in place a constitution that will address the concerns of all segments of the nation.

“Failure to use this opportunity might have its future consequences on the next generations.

“This period calls for sober reflection and sincerity of purpose on the part of all leaders and critical stakeholders by mobilizing the citizens for unity and tolerance across various regions, communities, religious and ethnic affiliations in order to engender harmonious and peaceful coexistence, as well as safeguarding human lives and property across the country,” the statement noted.

The group, however, promised not to rest on its oars to continue to enlighten religious groups and the generality of Nigerians on the need to live in peace with one another for the stability of one united Nigeria.
