Stakeholders under the auspices of Ekiti South Agenda Forum in Ekiti state have revealed that it would engage traditional rulers across the 28 communities in the zone ahead of the 2022 governorship election in the state.
The leaders from the six local government areas in the district in a communiqué released after its meeting said the engagement with the traditional rulers became necessary in their quest for the zone to produce governor Kayode Fayemi’s successor next year for the first time since the state’s creation.
The meeting had representatives of the former deputy governor, Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, the lawmaker representing Ekiti South, Senator Biodun Olujimi among others stakeholders in the district.
According to the communiqué signed by the protem chairman, Dr Adekunle Folayan and the Secretary, Mr Olu Famujimi, the leaders called on the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice consider the zone for the governorship ticket, saying the district parades qualified and competent aspirants.
The group said, “That all the Traditional Rulers across the twenty-eight towns and villages of the district would be visited to solicit their support and ensure an all-inclusiveness in the consultation for the shift of governorship to the South Senatorial District of Ekiti State in 2022.
“That the South Senatorial District must be awakened to the consequences of allowing either the North or the Central to get the governorship slot in 2022 again, as this will keep the South from the Governorship for 32years !!! May God forbid.
“That we appeal to the PDP leadership at the state, national and other authorities so delegated, to consider Ekiti South Senatorial district in its zoning for the next governorship primary as a matter of fairness, equity and justice and also to avoid governorship from eluding the district for 32 years.
“That members of the South Senatorial District must be constructive in engagements, peaceful, persuasive in approach and be historical in eliciting the support of the North and the Central Senatorial Districts for Governorship, as a Matter of Right in 2022.”
They further revealed that residents of the zone who are yet to register as voters to take advantage of the forthcoming continuous voters’ registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and enrol to boost the electoral strength of the district.
