SON seals store with substandard iron rod products

Published by

Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has been commended for its swiftness in taking actions against economic saboteurs who distribute substandard steel products into Nigerian markets.

It is recalled that officials of the SON at the weekend sealed a company in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, stocking substandard iron rods that were supplied by a steel manufacturing company located in Ikorodu after the Iron Rod Distributors Association of Nigeria (IRDAN) hinted the organization of the illegal act.

The IRDAN, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Owolabi Yisa, said “The Director-General of SON, Mr Farouq Salim, has fulfilled his pledge to frontally fight and stop the proliferation of fake steel products with the action taken against the distribution company.

The association, which said it tracked trailers loading the substandard products from the company in Ikorodu, added that one of the vehicles was traced to Alimosho, the destination of the distributor as other vehicles moved towards Shagamu road en route South East.

It also said the waybill also confirmed the claim.

It is recalled that the SON had given three months ultimatum to all iron rod distributors to clear their stores of substandard products and requested that anyone noticed to have stocked new batches of substandard products should be reported to SON.

“We are elated that SON made good its promise by taking prompt action of sealing up the iron rod distribution company stocking substandard products and we hold the belief that this will save Nigerians the risk of building collapse.

“We, however, admonish leadership of SON to ensure matters concerning substandard iron rods are followed to the letter for the safety of all, as those who trade in them usually have their ways through corrupt elements among the organization.

“We implore the Director-General of the SON to ensure those caught in the act are severely dealt with in accordance with the provision of the law,” the statement added.

The association urged the SON DG to use his good office to show Nigerians that no one is above the laws of the land.

“The DG is a Nigerian, we are Nigerians. But the Indian manufacturing the iron rods are not. Products manufactured for export are always standard, we wondered why these manufacturing companies formed the habit of producing substandard products for Nigeria,” IRDAN queried.

IRDAN urged SON to do a thorough investigation and mandate the return of the products to the manufacturer for remelting and reproduction to a standard form for the distributors, to serve as a lesson for the manufacturers.
