Soil Science Institute inaugurates zonal offices

The Nigerian Institute of Soil Science (NISS) has inaugurated its Zonal offices across the country for smooth discharge of its mandates.

Addressing the zonal Coordinators, the President and Chairman of NISS Council, Professor Ayoade Ogun Kunle said their function would be to assist the Nigeria Institute of Soil Science Headquarters in Abuja in the execution of its policies at the State and Local Government levels.

Others are “to organise training workshops, seminars, conferences and exhibitions in collaboration with the headquarters for relevant stakeholders in the areas relating to the mandate of the institute.

“To undertake inventorization of Soil and Fertilizer Analytical Laboratoris in private and public institutions for the accreditation of the Laboratories.

“Monitoring, enforcement of the regulatory activities of the institute, to serve as registration centres at the Zonal level for interested corporate and individuals wishing to join the institute.

“To facilitate the implementation of other activities of the institute at the zonal level in order to achieve a common goal.

He said NISS has continued to make steady progress on its mandate to ensure sustainable soil management for sustainable crop production and food security in Nigeria.

“We have also acquired offices in each of the six (6) Geopolitical Zones of Nigeria, the offices are being furnished, laboratory and field equipment are being obtained and the staff to man the offices are being recruited.

“The main purpose of the Zonal office is to make NISS to be effective, so that the Institute’s impact may be felt in all these Zones all over Nigeria”, he added.

On his part, the Registrar of NISS, Professor Victor Chude said NISS is an Agency under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with its Act enacted into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on 3rd February, 2017.

He said the Institute’s mandate is to regulate the practice of Soil Science for increased profitability to all stakeholders and guarantee improved soil management systems.

Other mandates include “conduct research on the physical, chemical and biological processes involved in the efficient management of nutrients and water.

“Identify improved methods and technologies involved in efficient soil management, exchange and disseminate information as well as collaborate with Universities of Agriculture and research organisations within and outside the country, and develop and maintain a database on soil science, among others.
