Sit-at-home order: Enugu observes two-day lockdown

Enugu State on Monday and Tuesday, observed a two-day lockdown in response to the call by the pro-Biafra IPOB to protest the detention of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, by the DSS and also in commemoration of the September 14, 2017 invasion by the Nigerian Military, of Kanu’s Afariukwu country home, during which 28 IPOB members were murdered by the invading force.

The said invasion was believed to be aimed at killing Kanu, who escaped by the whiskers and fled Nigeria even as he was on bail.

He has recently instituted a lawsuit against the said invasion in a court in Umuahia, Abia State under which jurisdiction Afariukwu is sited.

The suit comes up for hearing on September 17, 2021, sequel to an order of the court for service on the accused by substituted means.

As in other days of the sit-at-home, there has been no observed enforcement nor has there been any security deployment to checkmate any breakdown of law and others.

Motor parks and private loading bays as well as markets, supermarkets, shops, restaurants, bars, workshops, and offices were all shut.

Though schools are on vacation, students sitting for the WASSCE were in school and wrote their papers without any hindrance or incident. Banks and government offices were all shut, also. There were relative vehicular movements, but filling stations and gas refilling points were also shut.

Unlike in Anambra State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has not made any threat of sanctioning anybody, who complied with the directive.

Pedestrians were moving freely on major roads and streets on foot or by the few noncompliant minibuses and tricycles operators, who made brisk business, charging double and triple the normal fares.

In the inner streets, life continued in street shops, beer parlours, and food canteens, while POS operators thanked their stars for the increased business while vacationing students and apprentice market traders engaged in street football.

There have been no ugly incidents and the state was calm for as they say: “Enugu State Is In The Hands Of God”.
