Sit-at-home order: banks, shops, markets, schools close in Imo

Banks, markets, schools, hotels and others businesses in Owerri and its environs, on Monday, remained closed as residents of Imo State observed another round of relaxation of the sit-at-home order in the state.

The Sit at home Order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South/East also paralysed movement of vehicles and commercial activities in Imo State as markets, artisans, relaxation centres, all packed up for business.

In Owerri, the state capital, roads such as Douglas, Wetheral, Port-Harcourt, Aba, Umuahia and Onitsha Roads, recorded few vehicles as business centres, including major markets were deserted by both sellers and buyers.

Also at Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state, residents resorted to staying back in their homes, as a few that managed to move out, found it difficult to travel because of lack of vehicles to convey them to their destinations.

The picture was the same in Orlu, Okigwe, Oguta, Obowo, Ohaji/Egbema and the Mbano council areas, where local markets, motor parks and eatery centres all became desolate with utmost serenity.

However, drivers of the few busimo cabs, who daringly plied some roads within the Owerri metropolis, hiked their fares, just as Okada riders, desperate to eke out a living, ferried frustrated commuters to their destinations at exorbitant prices.

Our correspondent who monitored the situation reported that security personnel were not seen patrolling the roads, while commuters trekked long distances to get to their destinations.

There was also no movement of both people along Imo International Cargo Airport Road, even as commuters, vehicles deserted the road.
