Sit at home: Again, shops, markets, banks remain closed in Owerri

Residents of Imo State, on Monday, witnessed another round of sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in the South-East zone of Nigeria, as all shops, markets, business centres, and banks remained closed.

The order which had eventually turned to be weekly has also paralysed the movement of vehicles and commercial activities in Imo State.

Owerri, which is the state capital, roads such as Douglas, Wetheral, Port-Harcourt, Aba, Umuahia and Onitsha Roads, recorded few vehicles, business centres including major markets and schools were deserted by both sellers, buyers and school children.

Our correspondent in Owerri, who monitored the situation reported that the picture was the same in Orlu, Okigwe, Oguta, Obowo, Ohaji/Egbema and the Mbano council areas, where local markets, motor parks and eatery centres became dissolute with utmost serenity.

Tribune Online gathered that the situation has turned to be a free day for few drivers of Busimo cabs and Okada riders as they daringly plied some roads within the Owerri metropolis hiking their fares astronomically.

According to our correspondent, security personnel were not seen patrolling the roads, while commuters trekked long distances to get to their destinations.
