Sicklers and penis erection

Published by

I want to know why some people with Sickle Cell Disease (Sicklers) usually have problems with their penis erection.

During a normal erection blood flows into the penis and it becomes rigid. After ejaculation hormones are released which allow the blood to drain. However, if sickled red blood cells cause a blockage, the blood cannot drain and the penis stays erect. In medical terms, this is called Priapism (penile erection in the absence of sexual activity or desire). It is a common complication and cause of morbidity in males with sickle cell disease (SCD), including children, adolescents, and adults.

The vast majority of cases are ischemic, in which increased pressure compromises vascular circulation (a type of compartment syndrome). Over time, repeated episodes cause permanent damage and erectile dysfunction (ED). Priapism is considered a medical emergency in which timely diagnosis and appropriate management are vital to preserving normal function.
