Sensationalism, misinformation by media, are factors militating against successful COVID-19 vaccination ― NPHCDA

Sensational reporting of COVID-19 pandemic related issues, coupled with inadequate information by most reporters have been identified as some of the problems militating against successful vaccination exercises in the country.

The assertion was made by Head of Communications, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) Mohammed Musa Abubakar during a Media Orientation Meeting on COVID-19 Phase 2 vaccination exercise held, on Wednesday, at the Polio Emergency Operation Center (EOC), Bauchi.

He observed that rather than engaging in sensitisation, education and enlightening members of the public on the need to make themselves available for the vaccination which has been proven to be 90% potent, a large section of the media is concentrating on sensational reportage.

He opined that had the Media not sensationally contributed to the misconceptions about the COVID-19 vaccine, members of the general public would have accepted it since it was introduced by the federal government.

Musa Abubakar explained that the media was carried along in all of the processes leading to the administration of the vaccine saying, “from arrival at the airport to the national cold store, the media was adequately involved.”

He then appealed to media practitioners in Bauchi State to embark on sensitisation and education of the people in order to encourage them to take the vaccination having proved that it is potent.
