Senate screens service chiefs designate

The Senate Joint Committee on Defence, Army, Navy and Air Force, on Tuesday, screened the new Service Chiefs at the national assembly.

In attendance to take questions from the Committee led by former Sokoto State governor and Chairman of the Joint Committee, Aliyu Wammako were the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lucky Irabor, and the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru.

Others are the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao.

They were led to the screening room by Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, ( Senate) Senator Babajide Omoworare.

In their individual remarks before the Senate Committee dissolved into a closed-door session, the Service Chiefs designate thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for nominating them for the various positions promised to work assiduously and jointly to counterinsurgency, banditry and all threats to the nation’s security.

Tribune Online checks revealed that the Senate on February 9 received a formal request from President Muhammadu Buhari for the confirmation of the newly appointed Service Chiefs.

The request, contained in a letter dated January 27, was read by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary.

The letter came barely a week after the Presidency announced the resignation of the former service chiefs as well as the appointment of the new set.
