Senate adjourns plenary over Longjan’s death

The Senate on Tuesday adjourned plenary in honour of late Senator Ignatius Longjan, representing Plateau North, following his demise at the weekend.

The move was in line with the convention of the legislature which suspends plenary following the death of any of its members in either house of the national assembly.

Ignatius died on Sunday night after a brief illness at the Turkish hospital.

Longjan was the Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and former deputy governor Plateau state.

Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege who presided over the short plenary session said all legislative activities are therefore suspended till Wednesday after a minute silence.

“Our hearts are very heavy today, This is indeed one loss too many just as we have been grieving the loss of our late colleague, Benjamin Uwajumogu, within the space of two months and now we are faced with another.

Deputy President of the Senate said the news of Longjan death “was very painful; he was an amiable gentleman,” he noted.

He said, “Longjan was a man who rendered patriotic service to his state as a deputy governor and  senator, representing Plateau South Senatorial District; this Senate will miss him, the state will miss him and his family will miss him.”

Omo-Agege continued, “On behalf of the entire Senate we extend our condolences to the family, Plateau state, and the entire country.”

Omo-Agege also announced that Wednesday plenary would solely be dedicated to the valedictory session for the late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu who died in December 2019.
