GOVERNOR Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and his deputy, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, will be special guests of honour and keynote speaker, respectively, at a lecture organised by The Muslim Congress (TMC) to mark Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary.
The acting Waali of The Muslim Congress (TMC) in Lagos State, Alhaji Abdul Waheed Omotunde Omotunde, who made this disclosure at a press conference, said the lecture is scheduled to hold on Sunday on the open field of the Isolo campus of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH).
According to Omotunde, two dons, Professor Abdul Lateef Adeyemo from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Dr Abdul Kabir Paramole from the Lagos State University (LASU) will present papers at the lecture themed ‘Insecurity and National Unity: The Nation on Trial’, which will be chaired by a former National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Muiz Banire (SAN).
At the press conference, which heralded a weeklong programme of TMC, Alhaji Omotunde said: “Without any iota of doubt, the country has suffered major set-backs in almost every facet – economy, security, leadership, infrastructure and many more. These setbacks can, of course, be traced to a myriad of debilitating factors, chief among which is the lack of focus on and sustenance of the country’s strategic development plan.
“It is, therefore, important for us, at this stage of our nationhood, to reflect, in retrospection, at how we got to where we are at this critical time in order that we may work together to get to where we aspire to be as a strong, indivisible nation, united in hope and equal opportunity.”
“It is against this background that The Muslim Congress, Lagos State, is embarking on an all-week civic engagement programme to raise awareness about the multitude of challenges besetting our nation at this very delicate time in the hope that we can, through public dialogue, find the pathway to ending the deep quagmire of political and economic turbulence the country have sunk into.”
The group, which visited the Lagos State Correctional Home, Oregun, Ikeja, on Wednesday, had scheduled special Juma’at prayers at the Lagos Central Mosque and other major central mosques across the state today, while it would also offer free medical services to residents of Lagos Island at Jakande Mosque, Lagos Island, tomorrow, Saturday.
The event will climax on Sunday with a special prayer for the nation after the lecture at LASPOTECH, Isolo.
Omotunde said the group had put the programmes together as part of its public advocacy and civic responsibility towards the promotion of national development and cohesion.
He said the annual lecture, which is considered the climax of the all-week programme, would be held simultaneously in Ogun, Oyo, Kwara, Osun, Ondo, Edo and Niger states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
