Riots in South Africa as court begins to hear ex-President Zuma’s appeal against imprisonment

Riots are ongoing in South Africa as jailed former President Jacob Zuma challenged his sentence at a hearing in the country’s top court on Monday, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported.

Footage showed people looting shops and buildings set on fire.

Unrest began last week after Zuma handed himself in to begin a 15-month sentence. Several people have been killed and dozens arrested.

Zuma was convicted of contempt of court after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency.

Footage on Monday showed a fire at a shopping centre in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal, and people rushing in to loot. A supermarket was also ransacked, according to reports.

Similar scenes were seen over the weekend, with violence spreading to the city of Johannesburg, in Gauteng province.

However, a South Africa’s constitutional court on Monday started hearing an application by Zuma to have his sentence overturned.

Jacob Zuma started serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court last week.

His legal team is trying one last trick to have his jail sentence overturned – they want the court to set aside both the contempt of court finding and the prison sentence.

The former president was taken into police custody on Wednesday last week.
