Review retirement age of personnel, Nigerian Army tells FG

Published by

The Nigerian Army Veterans has on Friday urged the Federal Government to consider a review of the retirement age of its Nigerian Army personnel, due to the present economic realities.

The agitation for the review of age of personnel came in as a communiqué that was issued by veterans at the first quarter 2023 veterans affairs Workshop in Calabar.

However, at the closing ceremony of the veterans’ affairs workshop, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya, represented by Major General Abubakar Mohammed Bello, who is the Director Veterans Affairs Division, Defence Headquarters, Ministry of Defence, explained that there is no definite age yet, but that other factors must be given considerations at the highest level before naming a definite age.

“This seminar-workshop is for veterans, to see how the Armed forces can use the veterans to assist them in operations and further capacity building in the three services.

“Communiques were reached, at the end of the seminar bordering on a policy issue which one of which is the age review. It could be or would not be considered. But these are issues that are far beyond decisions to be taken here at this level.

“But it however, shows that, there is a need from the veterans. That’s why we hold these seminars, so that vacancies that exists in the service, can be filled by the veterans. We are sure that the communiqué would get it’s deserved attention at the highest level.”

Major General Bello, further added, “Before we mention age and give you numbers, other considerations would have to be brought into play, terms and conditions of service, it has to be looked at at the highest level, at this stage its still very immature to come up with a figure,” he said.

In an interview, one of the Participants who identified himself as Dr Emeka Ibesi, Enugu State Chairman of Nigerian Legion, said, “The annual seminar, is a very good one and should be sustained, it has brought life back into the activities of persons who retired from the Military.”
