Resident doctors’ strike has paralysed our job ― FMC Umuahia MD

The current strike action embarked upon by the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, has adversely affected the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia.
In an interview with the Medical Director, FMC, Umuahia Professor Onyebuchi Azubuike, disclosed this on Monday in Umuahia, stating, “the strike is affecting everything. They have messed up the system.”
“They didn’t do well and I am upset about the whole thing,” he said emphasising that Resident Doctors are the main set of doctors that can manage a hospital in terms of being around. “When they are not around, the hospital cannot operate fully,” he said.
“Obviously we have a lot of revenue loss. My appeal is for them and the Federal Government to resolve the issue so that the patients can stop suffering,” Professor Azubike pleaded.
“The entire Resident Doctors in the centre involved in the strike are numbering about 200. As a result, the hospital is managing a skeletal service and we are trying to open up emergency units,” he said.
He advised the FMC Association of Resident Doctors, ARD that dialogue “is a better way to solve the problem, while the strike is the last option”.

The strike, he noted, “affects the poor in the society and should be left as the last option.”
