Reps lament resurgence of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno, Yobe

Members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday expressed concerns over resurgence of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno and Yobe States.

The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance on the ‘Need for urgent military intervention and rescue of missing farmers of Koshebe, Karkut and Bulabilin in Jere Mafa Local Government Area attacked by Boko Haram terrorists’, as well as Terrorist attack on some villages in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State, sponsored by Hon. Ahmed Satomi and Hon. Shettima Ali.

In his lead debate, Hon. Satomi who called for the House intervention, disclosed that the “heavily armed Boko Haram terrorists attacked Zabarmari farmers working in their rice fields in the villages of Koshebe, Karkut and Bulabilin of Jere Mafa Local Government Area killing several of them.

“The House is worried that this attack was carried out by terrorists less than 20 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

“Further worried by the dynamic and strategy deployed by these terrorist attackers who were on motorcycles, divided themselves into three groups and attacked not with guns but rather used cutlasses and knives to stab and butcher the victims.

“The House notes that currently Security forces and Civilian Joint Task Force groups in the Nigerian North East of Borno have recovered 9 dead bodies while search continues in a bid to find more people who are still missing.

“The House is alarmed that in spite of the terrorist attack of Saturday, 4th November and the current search and rescue operations which is still ongoing , another attack and massacre of about 50 persons was again carried out in the night of Sunday, 5th November, 2023.

“The House is further alarmed that if urgent and drastic steps are not taken, the area may be overrun by terrorists with attendant dire consequences,” he noted.

To this end, the House mandated the Army to immediately mobilize troops to the affected areas to neutralize the terrorists and restore normalcy to the villages.

In the same vein, the House mandated Nigerian military to fortify security in Geidam and Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State, with a view to secure the communities and in order to forestall future attacks.

Hon. Shettima Ali who co-sponsored the motion lamented that there was a terrorist attack in Nguro Kayaiya, a Community under Kusur Damakarwa Ward in between Gumsa and Kusur towns of Geidam LGA, Yobe State on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st October, 2023.

According to him, the terrorists who were allegedly on a revenge mission, went to Nguro Kayaiya riding on about 15 motorbikes with sophisticated weapons, paraded and killed 16 male villagers at the outskirts of the village and later burnt down the village including houses, vehicles and tricycles.

The lawmakers also urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North East Development Commission (NEDC) and Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to as a matter of urgency mobilize humanitarian and relief materials to the affected villages.

While ruling, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas who presided over the plenary, mandated the joint Committees on Army and Disaster and Emergency Preparedness to ensure compliance.
