Reps call for effective regulation of Orphanage centres

The House of Representatives on Thursday underscored the need for the Federal Government to ensure effective regulation of the activities of Orphanage centres across the country.

The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion on the ‘Incessant abuse of Orphanage Centers in Nigeria,’ sponsored by Hon James Owolabi.

The lawmaker who called for the House intervention, however, observed that most of the Orphanage Centers where Orphans are kept and trained, “in some cases subjected to various forms of abuse.

“The House also notes that many Orphanages Centers are not registered which makes it difficult to ascertain the total number of orphans under their custody.

“The House is concerned that the unregistered orphanages’ Centres are involved in illegal operations such as child trafficking and nocturnal abuse of the orphans.

“The House is cognizant it is the responsibility of Government to protect the lives and properties of its citizens including the orphans.

“The House is also cognizant of the need to register and monitor the operations of Orphanage Centers across the country.”

To this end, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to regularly monitor and review the operational activities of orphanage operators, just as it mandated its Committee on Women Affairs to ensure compliance.
