The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has hinted that removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government may cause more hardship for Nigerians.
Arising from its 48th National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State at the weekend, NAAT called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of necessity revisit the plan.
The Association, in a communique issued at the end of its two-day meeting and signed by its National President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, insisted that the removal of fuel subsidy will affect the economy of the country and will cause more hardship to the citizens.
The association reinstated its strong position that vaccination against COVID-19 should not be made compulsory for Nigerians.
On the dreaded third wave COVID-19 (Omicron viariant), NAAT called on Nigerians to be aware and conscious of the virus.
NAAT commended the Federal Government for releasing the revitalisation fund to universities and called for its appropriate utilisation.
The Association equally thanked the Federal Government for the on-going construction and repairs of federal roads across the country and called on state governments to emulate these efforts.
The president said that NAAT has approved and perfected arrangements to reward and encourage academic performance across Nigerian Tertiary Institutions.
This, according to him, involves giving merit awards to the best graduating students in science and technology-related courses in three universities and a College of Education in each of the six geopolitical zones, commencing from March, 2022.
On insecurity, the Association commended the Federal Government’s efforts in its fight against insecurity and urged it to intensify efforts in curbing the menace.
It urges the Federal Government to use the 2009 FG/Universities based unions agreement strictly in sharing of the earned allowance arrears and also called for the implementation of the allowances as contained in the agreement.
NAAT, while condemning the delay in the payment of minimum wage arrears, called on the Federal Government and agencies responsible for the payment of the minimum wage to expedite action and pay in order to avert another industrial disharmony.
