Senator Abdullahi Adamu
Former Nasarawa State governor and Senator representing Nasarawa West, Abdullahi Adamu, has appealed to the stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give his nine-man reconciliation committee the benefit of doubt to enable it to deliver on its assignment.
Senator Adamu made the admonition on Monday shortly after Yobe State governor and Chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni inaugurated his team. Former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Moses Adeyemo will serve as Secretary of the troubleshooting team.
Investigation revealed that chieftains of the party have expressed strong reservations about the capacity of the committee which was announced last September to reconcile aggrieved party chieftains.
The scepticism is premised on the failure of previous committees before it to submit its reports.
Further investigation by Nigerian Tribune revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2018 appointed Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to lead the consultation, reconciliation and confidence-building team as a measure towards improving cohesion within the All Progressives Congress (APC) when Chief Odigie Oyegun was national chairman.
In February 2020, the dissolved APC National Working Committee led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole inaugurated a 12-man committee with former Osun State governor and pioneer chairman of the party, Bisi Akande and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Idris Wase as chairman and secretary, respectively.
Checks revealed that the Comrade Oshiomhole-led leadership dropped Senate President, Ahmad Lawan for Chief Akande following the rejection of the former by Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, who was involved in a leadership tussle with Oshiomhole before he defected to the PDP.
Senator Adamu told newsmen that his team would be a departure from the previous committees, promising to do wider consultations and make its findings known to Nigerians.
He said: “Somehow, all the members of the National Reconciliation Committee that I have seen are hopeful and positive. We believe we will be able to accomplish the responsibilities bestowed and the mandate given us today.
“We will make appropriate consultations with leader Asiwaju Tinubu. We will consult with the first national chairman of our great party, Chief Akande who was my contemporary as governor of Osun State as he then was and other prominent leaders and stakeholders of the party that will take interest in what we are doing, we will not hesitate to approach and talk to them and see the best way forward in reconciling our ranks.”
Earlier in his speech, Governor Buni said the “caretaker committee found it expedient to constitute the National Reconciliation Committee to reconcile emerging misunderstandings and differences which might arise from the outcome of the congresses.”
On terms of reference, Governor Buni tasked Senator Adamu Committee to “conduct appropriate engagement between identified groups in each state where there are disputes with a view to bringing about genuine reconciliation and establishing lasting peace and unity in the party; consult with party Leaders and concerned members as the committee deems necessary with a view to achieving peace therein.”
The Senator Adamu Committee was equally given the task to “critically examine areas of conflict on the just concluded Ward and Local Government Congress and advance solutions in the circumstance.”
The Yobe State governor urged them to conduct their assignment with diligence as he noted that their report would assist his leadership to conduct a seamless national convention.
“Your report on the resolution of these discrepancies would indicate our readiness as a united and strong family for the national convention. Your assignment, therefore, has a great impact and influence on the convention.
“I enjoin members of the committee to remain resolute and dedicated to executing this assignment with a spirit of teamwork, taking the interest of the party above personal and selfish interests for APC to remain strong, united and Nigeria’s leading political party.”
