In a bid to further encourage the adoption of ranching by livestock farmers in Nigeria, Real People Concept, a company renowned for cattle breeding, last weekend brought together young professionals in the livestock value chain to give them tutelage on mordern cattle ranching.
Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Tunmise Olagbaju, told the Nigerian Tribune during the training held at RPC Cattle Hub located in Ogbaagba Vilage, Olaoluwa Local Government Area, Iwo Osun State that:”With the current development in Nigeria, It is obvious that cattle ranching is the way to go. But going by my encounter from one farm to the other, I realise that some of the existing ranches do not have professionals handling them.
“Another one is that most of our young professionals do not have the idea of opportunities that exist in cattle ranching, For example, some of them could take up jobs as farm managers or ranch managers if they are well trained.
“There are lot of opportunities that exist, for exmaple, people who are into agriculture engineering, we have shredder to shred grass and all that. We have some veterinarians that can render health services to farmers. Even agric extension expert, they can render extension services to various ranches, they can also supply input along the line. So, these and many more are the opportunities we are exposing the young people to.
Olagbaju also stated that:”And we are also looking at young people also going to cattle ranching. Many atimes they are afraid of going into the business alone, they can form a cooperative like young cattle ranchers. If you get it registered, you get the government noted about it, you can even approach the government for land. If government is sincre about youth development, then the Ministry of Youth and Sport can be involved at least to empower the youth.
“I see a lot of opportunity in cattle ranching, Lagos alone consumes over 6,000 cattle everyday, not to talk of other states in the South-West. And we do not produce enough so we can encourage young people to go into cattle production and we can create jobs throught it, we can reduce crime, we can improve the socio-economic life of these young people and we can make them contribute positively to the development of the society.”
One of the participants at the training, Dr Temitope Olodun, told the Nigerian Tribune that the skill acquired at the training will in no small measure contribute to development of her sheep and goat rearing business.
She stated further that:”With the way things are things are in the Nigerian economy now, we should go into cattle rearing by ourselves and not just depending on cattle, sheep and goat coming from northern part of the country. So, I believe things like this would help us to be more independent down here.”
