I previously said in one of my letters that fuel subsidy cannot remain perpetually, but adequate provisions should be made for the masses before it is totally removed. It is always good to set yam tubers on fire before searching for a knife with which to peel the yam. This may sound proverbial but it is a statement of fact. Nigerians are still recovering from the CBN naira redesign policy that inflicted much pain on them.
If Aliko Dangote can have a private refinery in the country, the Federal Government can prioritise the resuscitation of moribund refineries across the federation. Those who are jobless would be gainfully employed rather than getting involved in nefarious activities that can disturb the peace of the society.
The fact cannot be overstated that the non-provision of palliatives before the removal of fuel subsidy has brought hardship to the citizenry.
Government workers are lamenting their poor salaries. The past administration couldn’t do anything on salary increment. In recent times, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) appealed to the Federal Government to increase the salaries of civil servants at all levels before removing fuel subsidy but there was no response to that.
The truth of the matter is that the prices of essential commodities in the market will keep skyrocketing on a daily basis. I, therefore, appeal to President Tinubu to make palliatives available to Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy.
