Ramadan: MMPN, MMWG counsel Muslims, food dealers

THE Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) has advised Muslims to be moderate and follow COVID-19 protocols as they observe this year’s Ramadan fast and engage in other spiritual activities.

The chairman of the organisation in Oyo State, Alhaji Ridwan Fasasi, who gave the advice in a statement in Ibadan, said although there is no restriction by the government, regular Ramadan activities like tarawih, tafsir, group iftar and annual lecture should be carried out in moderate manners and in line with COVID-19 protocols.

Fasasi noted that since Ramadan is a month full of blessings, Muslims should use the opportunity to seek Allah’s forgiveness to halt the coronavirus disease which has brought the world to its knees.

He urged the faithful, especially the wealthy ones, to remember the underprivileged and others that the current economic challenges have affected.

The Oyo MMPN leader implored those handling lectures and explanation of the holy Qur’an at this period to lay emphasis on issues bordering on patriotism, peaceful coexistence and love for one another.

He stated that since Ramadan fast is hinged on the attainment of God-consciousness, Muslims should ensure that their actions and inaction follow the dictates of Allah.

In its own message, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) urged dealers and retailers of foodstuffs not to increase the cost of the items during the holy month.

In the message signed by the national coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi and national secretary, Dr Nasir Balogun, the MMWG described the holy month of Ramadan as a blessing to mankind.

The group described profiteering as a grievous sin in the sight of God as it creates hardship for the masses, warning that the problem of hunger and poverty in the land must not be increased through hiking of costs of food items.

On the problem of insecurity in land, the group admonished those engaging in terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and all forms of criminal activities to, in the spirit of the holy month, quit and resolve to live better lives.
