Raising and reproducing leaders (III)

We have been discussing raising and reproducing leaders. Leaders will not emerge if there is no deliberate process put in place.

 

Pre-conditions to reproducing leaders:

1)     The main leader must create an enabling environment for leaders to grow, be groomed and produced. The main leader must create an environment where there is trust. There must be mutual trust between the leader and the followers. The followers must see that the leader has their interest at heart and that he is interested in their development. The vision of the organization must be clearly spelt out and followers must see clearly how the vision relates to them. They must see their future in the vision.

“The greatest leaders mobilize others by coalescing people around a shared vision.” Ken Blanchard

2). The main leader himself must be “followable” – he must be an effective leader worthy of being emulated. Followers are more likely to become leaders if their main leader is a model of leadership for them.

“Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position.” Brian Tracy

A leader must be an inspiration before he can reproduce other leaders.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” John Quincy Adams

The leader being worth “following” will encourage people to be freely raised by him. This makes raising and reproducing leaders easier.

“Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” Philippians 4:9.

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” Jack Welch

3)      The main leader must be a resource person. He must be competent and have what it takes to raise others. He must provide private and public “tutoring”.

“And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.” Mark 4:10-12.

Raising and reproducing leaders. Part 4

In the last couple of weeks we have been looking at the issue of raising and reproducing leaders. Last time we looked at the prerequisites to raising and reproducing leaders.

1. The main leader must create an enabling environment for leaders to grow, be groomed and produced. The main leader must create an environment where there is trust. There must be mutual trust between the leader and the followers. The followers must see that the leader has their interest at heart and that he is interested in their development. The vision of the organization must be clearly spelt out and followers must see clearly how the vision relates to them. They must see their future in the vision.

We continue today and look at other prerequisites.

4)      The main leader must have the eyes to discover latent/hidden leadership potentials in people and help them realize and release the potential.

A leader must see people from their future rather from their present state. Many times people don’t look great but a leader who will reproduce leaders must see beyond the ordinary.

“Jesus chose twelve men. Among the twelve He drew three closer to Him to reproduce Himself in them.  He would eventually send them out to preach. His whole plan was to make these men into carriers of the Good News.  If they failed, then Jesus failed. I wonder if Jesus picked Peter to show us what could be made of the roughest material.  Peter talked too much, and was loud. He did not come from a family with leadership background.  His profession was not highly regarded.  His skills as a fisherman did not lend themselves to becoming a spiritual leader.  He was the kind of person most dislike. Yet, Jesus picked him and said I will make you a fisher of men.

Have you ever looked at another leader and the young men under him and thought, I could make something good of them? Jesus took the least likely and made them highly productive for the Kingdom.“  James Crumpacker

We have been discussing raising and reproducing leaders and the last time we looked at the prerequisites.

2. The main leader himself must be “followable” – he must be an effective leader worthy of being emulated. Followers are more likely to become leaders if their main leader is a model of leadership for them.
3. The main leader must be a resource person. He must be competent and have what it takes to raise others. He must provide private and public “tutoring”.

Today we continue.

5)      There must be the availability and provision for timely advice. “But Jesus said unto them, ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? And be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” Mark 10:38-48.

6. The main leader must be committed to raising and reproducing leaders through mentoring. There are many components of effective give mentoring but let us look at some :

”Be committed to the person we undertake to mentor. We must be able to express our love and appreciation for them and they should always feel we have their best interest at heart. Be committed to the process.  It takes time to develop leaders.  There will be ups and downs in the process but stay the course. Be committed to the purpose.  Our goal is the end result we envision for them. Don’t be easily discouraged.  Philippians 1:6 says God has started something in us and will not quit until it is completed.  We must have that same commitment.” James Crumpacker If every leader commits to raising and reproducing other leaders life will surely be a better place to live in.
