Public works volunteers arrest two suspected illegal oil bunkerers in Edo

Two suspected oil thieves were on Tuesday arrested by officials of the Edo State Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) in Benin City.

The coordinator of PUWOV, Mr Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, who disclosed this in Benin assured that the organization will continue to work tirelessly with other security agencies to curb criminality and ensure peace and orderliness in the state.

According to Yusuf-Osagie, the suspects were nabbed in two Audi vehicles marked EDO BEN 206 PK and DELTA GRA 91 CH along Airport Road by Ezoti Road junction.

He said the suspects have been handed over to the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further interrogation and prosecution.

He said: “PUWOV officials accosted two Audi vehicles which contravened the law at Ezoti axis of Airport Road in Benin City. It was later discovered that the vehicles were used in the illegal transportation of oil in gallons. The two vehicles were fully loaded with gallons of oil and other instruments used in illegal oil bunkering.”

He alleged that the suspects attempted to induce the volunteers with a sum of N50, 000 to buy their freedom and escape justice, adding that the PUWOV officials rejected the bribe.

The coordinator added: “We have handed the suspects and their vehicles over to the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and prosecution.”
