Protest in Benin over deplorable condition of Benin-Sapele road

Vexed by the deplorable condition of the Edo portion of the Benin-Sapele road by Benin bypass, scores of youths took to the streets yesterday to draw the government’s attention to the state of the expressway which connects Edo with neighbouring oil-rich Delta State.

The visibly angry youths converged on a section of the failed portion of the road by the popular RCC junction at the outskirts of Benin City and brandishing placards with different inscriptions.

They called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Works, Mr Babatunde Fashola to do something about the condition of the road which is littered with deep gullies.

The protest resulted in a traffic gridlock on the road even as policemen were seen controlling traffic and attempting to maintain orderliness amidst the chaos.

Addressing the protesters who were mostly youths drawn from different parts of the Edo State capital, the President of One Love Foundation, Mr Patrick Eholor, who joined the protest lamented that maintenance of road construction ought not to be a matter for discussion in the 21st century especially in a country that prides itself as the giant of Africa.

Eholor vowed to sustain the tempo of the protest, which was largely peaceful, until the road is properly fixed, adding that “the road has become a deathtrap for road users and hideouts for armed robbers especially at night.”

The activist maintained: “I am sure that Babatunde Fashola has been travelling either with a chopper or an aeroplane with his family not to know what challenges road users to face daily on the dilapidated road.”
