Prepare to buy chickens at high cost during festive period, PAN tells Nigerians

Published by

Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria (PAN) has said that Nigerians will buy chickens at exorbitant prices during the festive period due to the high cost of production.

The association said foreign exchange and security challenges in the country are major factors contributing to the hike of chickens and other poultry products.

The Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the Association, Dr Olalekan Odunsi, who disclosed this during the 2021 Poultry Show held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital disclosed that the export of soya and maize are some of the major problems bedevilling the industry.

Odunsi appealed to the Federal Government to ban the exportation of soya meals and maize, to encourage local use by farmers.

“A lot of farms have closed down and only a few are available. So, the cost of chicken will be high this festive period and more so the cost of maize and soya continues to increase. So, with this people should brace up for the high cost of chicken during the festive period.

“What is more challenging in poultry business is forex – foreign exchange. A lot of materials that we use are imported except for maize and soya. All these are affecting the cost of production. So let’s prepare for a very high cost this December,” he added.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Adeola Odedina, while speaking to journalists on the sideline of the event reiterated the state government commitment to increase the production of chickens in the state.

Odedina said the current administration was committed to working with poultry farmers to encourage mass production of livestock and eggs for export value-chain.

The commissioner said “when it comes to poultry farming, you know Ogun State is number one and that is why we don’t joke with it. We are ready to partner with interested pilots to make profits so that stakeholders can also key into it.

“We are doing this to continue to make Ogun State a destination of choice for investors and continues to be an induction hub of the nation.”
