Police Special Constabulary recruited in 2020 by the Muhammadu Buhari led administration to fight insecurity in the grassroots has appealed to Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu on payment of salaries since their recruitment.

The Special Constabularies who were recruited to pilot the community policing policy of the Nigeria Police Force lamented that since their recruitment in 2020, they have not been paid stipends or salaries.

Speaking with Nigerian Tribune during a peaceful protest on Thursday, General Number 1 of the Oyo state chapter of the Special Constabulary,Taofeek Akinpelu also known as Awise, stated that it is unfortunate that despite their commitment to  service to the community they were not  recognised and appreciated.

He said, “We are the special Constabulary recruited in October 2020, by the federal government to give support to the Nigeria Police Force to help fight crime at the grass root level, then we were trained on police operations and were also  given police uniform so we perform duties just like a police officer too.

“Since our recruitment in year 2020 we have been working hard towards fighting crime in our various stations  despite not being paid.

“Sometimes last year we met with the Oyo state commissioner of Police, Adebowale Williams over the unpaid salaries while he promised to help meet with the state government, but we were later told that the state government has no business with us because we were only recruited by the federal government and not the state government.

“We are still working till date even though we have not been paid and we are not ready to leave the job because of our commitment to the job so far.

“We hereby appeal to the newly elected president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu to help intervene in the matter.

‘Out of 36 states in Nigeria, only two states pay the Police Special Constabulary in the state, Akwa Ibom and Lagos state while the Police Constabulary in Abuja were given stipends too. We therefore appeal to the federal government to remember us because we as well have families we feed”, he said
