Police establish murder, conspiracy charges against suspected killers of Lagos grassroots politician

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) of the Nigerian Police has established murder and conspiracy charges against the suspected killers of a grassroots politician and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ifeanyi Godfrey.

Godfrey was killed on the 16th April 2021 at his duty post at the Western Funeral Home Limited Cemetery in Ijede Local Council Development Area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

In a sworn affidavit, the Investigating Police Officer in charge of the case, Inspector James Owunebi declared that the FCID has concluded an investigation, stating, a prima facie case of conspiracy and murder has been established against the suspects.

Owunebi declared the need to grant his applications in the interest of justice for the deceased and the country at large.

The sworn affidavit sighted by Nigerian Tribune and dated September 20, 2021, read in part, “The Investigating Police Officer, Inspector James Owunebi attached to the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos. That the nominal Complainant through a petition dated 1 day of April 2021 to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of FCID annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, alleging the aforementioned offences.

That immediately the defendants/respondents were tracked and arrested, they were cautioned and voluntarily made the statement.

That the defendants allegedly murdered the victim, Ifeanyi Etunmuse Godfrey aged 52 yrs.

That this application is for an order to remand the defendants/respondents the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Facility custody pending DPP’s advice and subsequently charge the defendants to a court of competent jurisdiction.

That the investigation has been concluded and there is a prima facie case of conspiracy and murder of one Ifeanyi Godfrey against the defendants. That it is in the interest of justice to grant this application.”

The suspects, 34-year old, Olarewaju Adesanya, Owolabi Sodiq, 28; Michael Shittu, 28 and Olaide Opeifa have been remanded at the Correctional Facility.
