Police apprehend suspected gun runner supplying bandits in Plateau

A man suspected of being a gun runner was apprehended by the Plateau State Police Command while allegedly attempting to supply arms to bandits in Jos, Plateau State.

According to a source close to the police, the suspect boarded a vehicle from Zamfara State and arrived at the NTA motor park in Jos on Wednesday around 6:45 p.m.

He was caught while trying to deliver a consignment containing arms and ammunition to bandits operating in the troubled regions of the state.

Ibrahim Maikudi, the chairman of the motor park, confirmed the incident, noting that the suspect was arrested shortly after his arrival from Zamfara State.

Maikudi added that security personnel within the vicinity rescued the suspect from being lynched by an angry mob.

“The man was rescued by the security men within the vicinity; it happened around 5:30 p.m. yesterday. Immediately after being alerted by a vehicle, he started pacing up and down the motor park, making suspicious calls. Those who heard his suspicious calls asked him for more clarifications about his mission.

“At this juncture, our boys in the park now joined others to interrogate him, and he confessed his mission. His luggage was thoroughly searched, and arms and ammunition were discovered in large quantities.

“It was then that people tried to beat him up, but we immediately made a call to the police because we feared the mob might kill him. He confessed that he was not the only one on such a mission to Jos and that there were many others.

“So that’s how men from the Special Investigations Bureau unit of the police came and arrested and took him into custody.”

The spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, could not be reached immediately when our correspondent contacted him about the incident, as his phones were switched off.
