The meeting between the leadership of the Organised Labour in Ondo State and the state government ended in a deadlock on Tuesday night.
The meeting which was called at the instance of the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu was presided over by the state Head of Service, Dare Aragbaiye over the percentage of salaries to be paid to the workers for November salary.
The Organised Labour, however, kicked against the government decision to only pay the 50 per cent outstanding balance of the November salary, saying workers in the state would no longer accept modulated salary starting from December 2020.
They asked the state government to pay the outstanding 50 per cent of the workers’ salary and the full payment of the December 2020 salary.
While the state government offered the 50 per cent outstanding of November 2020 salary and also some certain percentage in December salary, the leadership of the workers in the state outrightly rejected the offer.
The organised Labour, however, resolved after the meeting and “rejected outrightly the readiness of the state government to pay the outstanding 50 per cent balance of November 2020 now and a certain percentage of December 2020 salary by next week.”
The organised labour stated that after careful study and extensive discussion on the realities of the facts before it, with a view not to jeopardize the interest and welfare of its members, Labour agreed to the following;
“That, payment of the 50 per cent balance of November 2020 salary is non-negotiable.
“That, the offer of government to “look inward” in the bid to get more money for the payment of “something” for December 2020 was welcomed.
“That, the payment of both the November 50 per cent balance and “certain percentage” for December 2020 salary by next week was also agreed to as “number two of something is better than number one of nothing”
“That, we appeal to our members and appreciate their endurance and patience till next week when salaries will be paid according to the state government.
“Finally, we wish to restate our commitment and allegiance to the welfare of our members. These are trying times that we shall surely overcome.”
It will be recalled that the Labour union in the state met with the state government twice last week and the outcome of the meeting was communicated accordingly.
Another meeting was called at the instance of the Head of Service on Tuesday, 2nd March 2021 and the meeting was competently attended by the leadership of Organised Labour, Chairmen and Secretaries of affiliated Unions, NMA, NAGGMDP, MDCAN and NARD.
