PDP zonal congress: Women not given fair representation ― Princess Oyefusi

Published by

Former Lagos East Senatorial District candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, reacted to the just-concluded zonal congress of the party which held on Monday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, frowning at the process for not giving adequate preference for women participation, despite the passing of the 35 per cent affirmative women representation agenda by PDP headquarters.

The congress had seen former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Hon Taofeek Arapaja, emerged as zonal chairman, beating his opponent, Dr Eddy Olafeso.

Oyefusi, while frowning at the development, lamented what she termed the “unfair domination of the political space” by men in spite of women having the number, experience and capacity, noting that women representation should be about 50 per cent going by the current ratio of increase.

The party chieftain argued that women deserved equal access to political leadership positions as men and needed to be supported by affirmative action, expressing dismay and disbelief that PDP didn’t give women, especially Lagos women equal access in the just concluded congress.

The senatorial candidate, while further describing the poor representation of women in the Executives list especially in respect of Lagos State, stated that the situation would deny them the opportunity to properly contribute their quota to nation-building.

Princess Oyefusi maintained that PDP has no justification to defend why women, especially Lagos women should not be fairly represented in its political leadership, having had the capacity as well as the number.

“In 2014, we were about 49 per cent of the population and this is 2019. We should be about 50 per cent going by the ratio of increase.

“Despite our large number, we are not yet visible in the political space. We have never had proportionate representation in politics.

“We have never had a female president or female governor, or recommend 35% representative. Even we have never had a woman as chairman of any of the political parties across the states,” she lamented.

“Therefore, women need to be properly represented in all political positions for the sake of equality and justice. We have a lot to give Nigerians,” she said.
